Senate Approves Making Salary Information Easily Accessible

The state Senate unanimously passed legislation requiring the salaries of government employees to be posted on the Internet, according to Senator Gib Armstrong.

The measure applies to all three branches of state government and to local governments and school districts.

"This step is another important win for open government.  Our citizens have a clear interest in this information because, whether it is a legislative employee or a state worker or a city worker, their salaries are being paid out of tax dollars," Armstrong said.

"These lists will show who is on the public payroll, what their job titles are, who they work for, how much they are paid, and if they receive any supplemental pay," he explained.

Under the bill, the state Treasurer is responsible for making sure the list of state employees is as accurate and complete as possible.  Local agencies will maintain their own websites setting forth the required information.

"Posting this information on the Internet will add a degree of accountability for those making hiring decisions and setting salary levels, for their actions will be available for people to see and to analyze," Armstrong noted.

The measure is Senate Bill 729.  Senator Armstrong is among the bill's sponsors.

The salaries of Senate employees have been part of the public record for many years, but posting them on the Internet will make the information more readily available.
