IMMEDIATE RELEASE State Senate Votes to Extend Fire and Ambulance Grants for 5 YearsSince first initiated in 2000, state funding for volunteer fire companies and ambulance services has involved a year-after-year effort to secure and safeguard the pool of money. The many volunteer outfits across Pennsylvania can get some breathing room and engage in better planning if legislation extending the program for five years becomes law, according to Senator Gib Armstrong, who voted for Senate Bill 10. "This grant program is one of the most important things we do to help out communities and help protect families. As the costs rise for equipment and training, it is hard for local fundraising to keep pace. State funding plays a part in filling the gap, and we believe it is time to provide some certainty the money will be available," Armstrong said. "There are a lot of time demands put on the men and women who volunteer to provide these indispensable services. This legislation recognizes their dedication and commitment. It also means they will not have to spend so much time fighting for funding every year," he added. The state grants can be used toward repair or construction of facilities, repair or purchase of equipment, reducing debt, and the training and certification of members. Fire companies are eligible for grants up to $15,000, and ambulance services are eligible for grants up to $10,000.
